How To Get The Smile You Wish By Lingual Braces

Today’s orthodontic treatments are a lot more diverse than you remember from last two decades. While metal braces are still very widespread, there are a lot more options than there used to be. One of the latest method of fitting teeth invisibly is lingual braces which are braces that are adhered to the back of your teeth (the tongue or lingual side) rather than the front of the teeth making them practically invisible. Lingual braces are a good way to get the dream smile without other people having to know about it.

Who are the right candidates for lingual braces?

Regardless of all this positive side, the important fact is that is very similar in technique to traditional metal braces and lingual braces are not for everybody. But the question is, am I a good candidate for lingual braces?
A basic requirement for any orthodontic treatment particularly the lingual braces is there should not be any periodontal issues and having healthy periodontal tissues. The gingivae (gums) should be in good shape without any swelling or bleeding and oral hygiene should be good.

Can You Deal with Some Temporary Speech Effects?

For the first couple of weeks after getting lingual braces, it’s common for there to be some effects on your speech because the braces are on the inside of your teeth, it will feel a little strange at first. You may experience some speech difficulty like slight lisp, whistling sounds, slurring of certain words, or small mispronunciations until you get used to them. This is because your tongue is “retrained” to work around the braces as you create sounds. But don’t worry; your tongue, however, will eventually train itself to find a different place in the mouth.

Traditional braces and ceramic braces can have this effect, too.  The only difference is that these braces do not often make contact with the tongue, and so any obvious effects tend to head off much more quickly. Your best bet is to practice talking out loud or reading out until you feel like your speech is back to normal.

Is the Fitting Process for Lingual Braces Difficult?

It would seem that fitting braces to the back of a patient’s teeth would be a difficult task, but this is usually carried out in a single appointment. Nowadays, Orthodontists are trained to appropriately to administer lingual braces with sophisticated orthodontic technology.  Once you have had the initial assessment and decide to go ahead with the treatment, the dentist will book an appointment to have your records taken for x-rays, pictures and impressions of your teeth. Then the treatment plan will be designed after examining your records and you will now be ready to have the braces fitted. This is usually carried out in a single appointment.
