Tooth decay mainly occurs when foods containing carbohydrates such as different types of breads, cereals, milk, soda, fruits, cakes, chocolates and candy are left on the teeth. Bacteria which live in the mouth break down these foods, turning them into acids. The bacteria, the acid, remains of food and saliva combine to form yellow coloured plaque, which clings to the teeth. The acids present in the plaque dissolve the enamel surface of the teeth, creating holes in the teeth called cavities.

  • Brush the teeth for at least two times a day and preferably with fluoride containing toothpaste. Try brushing after each meal and especially before going to bed.
  • Clean between the teeth daily with the help of dental floss.
  • Rinse daily with the help of a fluoride-containing mouthwash. Some rinses also contain antiseptic ingredients, which help to kill bacteria that cause plaque.
  • Try eating nutritious and balanced meals and limit junk food. Avoid carbohydrate-containing foods such as candy, pretzels, and chips, which remain on the tooth surface. If sticky foods are eaten, brush the teeth soon afterward.
  • Consult the dentist about dental sealants applied to the chewing surfaces of your back teeth to protect them from decay.
  • Drink fluoridated water. At least a pint of fluoridated water each day is needed to protect children from tooth decay.
  • Visit the dentist regularly for professional cleanings and oral exam.

At Dental Works Clinic, Bangalore they render customized treatment plans for their patients and educates their patients about daily oral hygiene practice.
